This book, written by Barry St. Clair and Bill Jones, has a very attractive title: At that time, I did not think much about the book. But now looking back I am glad that my wife did not apply the principles taught in it, or I might not have married her! As the book progresses, however, it becomes quite clear that the authors are simply trying to force-fit some biblical guidelines into a questionable worldly practice which is at worst a sensual and meaningless end-in-itself relationship experiment, and at best a rather selfish trial-and-error spouse fishing method.
Consider how the authors exalt non-commitment in dating and deprecate commitments.
I believe both dating and courting can be done in a way that produces happy Christian homes and brings glory to God. I believe His word allows us liberty to choose which, if either, process of spouse selection works best for our families. Just what is courting—in the modern sense— exactly? I have spoken to several families who have adopted this practice, and, as I understand it, the parents are heavily involved in the selection of eligible spouses for their children.
It’s time for Christians to resurrect the idea of courting and redefine what godly relationships should look like. 1-Spiritual The first component to courtship is spiritual.

Ancient Jewish weddings never involved a wedding ceremony like we see today with the bride walking down the aisle to be married in the synagogue. The “wedding ceremony” is something that did not develop for hundreds of years after Jesus rose from the dead. Modern Jewish weddings are as removed and different from the ancient Jewish marriage culture of the first century as Christian weddings are. If you want to understand the many metaphors, illustrations and figures of speech used by Jesus about “the wedding feast” and the church as the “bride of Christ”, you must learn the ancient culture and forget everything you know about modern marriage ceremonies.
There were three states of a marriage in the Bible: The bride would chose her husband and her father would sign a legal contract with him called a “ketubbah”. Young children were often married, arraigned marriage but did not consummate until of age. Up to 7 years later, the groom is able to raise the money as set out in the ketubbah contract and notifies the father of the bride, who then sets a date to consummate the marriage at the bride’s home.
The bride waits with her maidens, for the arrival of the groom and his companions.

This happened to me the other night. A dear friend and I were talking about our kids and how to help them transition from children to adults. The topic of dating and relationships came up and we started talking about my story. It somehow validates my belief that some of the teachings I grew up with were very wrong. Fear of loving and losing. Fear of making the wrong choice.
Courtship may be difficult for people who have experience dating. This kind of relationship has limited involvement, at least at first, and involves many religious practices. A trip into the future: How does this all work? The previous articles have mostly described the “what” and the “why. I’ll start out by describing how I would like my courtship to work, “the ideal scenario!
The potential for a young person’s heart to be broken, and for there to be great pain is there in a courtship just as it is in dating. There is a godly way to date without placing on the relationship all of the rules, regulations, and strains of courtship.
How Does Courtship Work? What worked well for one couple might not be the best choice for another couple. The concepts presented here are helpful guidelines to consider, but the list is not exhaustive. Courtship Is the First Step Toward Marriage Do not enter into courtship until you are at a stage in life when marriage is a realistic possibility. Understand the importance of the decision you are making regarding marriage, and establish commitments about your relationships prior to entering a courtship.
Until you are ready for marriage, ask God to lead you in developing friendships with Godly men and women, but do not try to win the affections of those friends.

They provide safety, uniform levels of acceptable performance and guidelines for behavior.
Take, for example, the manufacturer who is interested in selling a product on a long-term basis. Such an entrepreneur must maintain rigid quality controls to secure and keep long term satisfaction with his product. Should he let down his standards in production or in handling consumer concerns, it would mean ultimate loss of business and profitability or, to put it another way, the success or failure of his venture.
The “World” Uses Standards Though many consumer products are shoddily made and with a philosophy of “planned obsolescence,” they do not survive in a market place of fair competition. Purchasers with discernment look for quality, value and service and thus impose certain “standards” on that which is acceptable to the market at large. Manufacturers who ignore these consumer-mandated “standards” do so at their own peril and will not survive.
In the medical community, professional health providers must meet exacting standards of education, peer review, on-the-job performance and licensure.

Modern dating seems to be about “finding” the right person for me (as my friend Michael Lawrence has written on this site, “Stop Test-Driving Your Girlfriend“); biblical dating is more about “being” the right person to serve my future spouse’s needs and be a God-glorifying husband or wife.

In addition to what all of you saw on the blog, I have received dozens of questions and comments in e-mails, which I and the folks at Boundless have culled through to see what the most pressing questions seem to be. Judging from both frequency and “passion,” the most pressing questions arising from the last piece involve physical involvement — which I’m about to cover, initiation of relationships especially the bit about involving the woman’s father , and the practical details of how one of these relationships works.
